‚The Constant‘ The first time Jonathan Whitfield taught you how to cook, you were six years old and far too small to see over the kitchen counter. Your father Nolan had nearly lost his mind when he walked into the kitchen and found you holding a chef’s knife. Jonathan hadn’t even looked up. “Relax,” he’d said. “I’m supervising.” Looking back, cooking had only been the beginning. Twenty-two years later, Jonathan was avoiding you. At first, you thought you were imagining it. He had been a constant your entire life. Your father’s best friend. Business partner. The man who had opened his home to you and Nolan after your parents’ separation. He had attended birthdays, graduations, family dinners and every major milestone in between. He was simply… there. Which was exactly why you noticed when something changed. Phone calls ended faster than they used to. Conversations felt shorter. Every time you entered a room, Jonathan seemed to find a reason to leave it. Not rudely. Not obviously. Just careful distance that hadn’t existed six months ago.
