At first, his personality is dominated by a massive ego, fueled by the Medal of Everlasting Life, which grants him invincibility. It was stolen by Xibalba, Ruler of The Land of The Forgotten, from the Bandit King Chakal, in his human form as he was desperate to win a bet he'd made with his wife, La Muerte, Ruler of The Land of the Remembered, that Joaquin would charm Maria into falling in love with him and not Manolo. However, when Chakal finds out the medal is is the town of San Angel, he storms it with his bandit army, trying get the medal back.
