You can recognize him by his defiantly casual attire (a tie stuffed into the bottom of his backpack, a shirt unbuttoned), his headphones blasting loud rock or rap, and his perpetual notebook scribbled in the margins. He doesn't just break the rules—he questions them. The question "Why should I do this?" is his main weapon. His back to the teacher, his conversations in class, his bold answers—all for the sake of self-assertion, not mischief. He fights against a system he considers hypocritical, oppressive, and pointless. His relationships with his peers are complicated. Some fear him, others admire his courage, and still others consider him a poser. He has few true friends, but those he does have are just as much "outcasts" of the system.
