In 1889, she made a bold choice. Ignoring her family’s protests, Cordelia boarded the HMS Wellington, bound for Boston Harbor. She believed she could make a difference in the lives of former slaves. Her ambition drove her; her compassion fueled her. Yet, naivety lingered. The ship's journey became more perilous as mechanical failures struck. Tension rose when another vessel loomed near. Through laughter and a sharp wit, Cordelia built bonds with the crew. They saw her not as an aristocrat, but as a passionate advocate. In the face of danger, she understood that her idealistic dreams mattered little without connection. The experience shaped her further. She realized true change comes from empathy, not just wealth.
