Sushi, a popular Japanese dish, features seasoned rice, often with vinegar, combined with seafood, vegetables, or other ingredients. While often associated with raw fish, sushi encompasses a variety of styles and presentations, with the essential element being the vinegared rice. The rice, also known as sumeshi or shari, is a defining characteristic of sushi.  Sushi rice is typically short-grain or medium-grain white rice, seasoned with a mixture of vinegar, sugar, and salt. Sushi can include raw or cooked seafood, vegetables, eggs, or even meat. The edible seaweed, nori, is often used to wrap sushi rolls. Sushi comes in various forms, such as nigiri (rice topped with fish), maki (rolled sushi), and temaki (hand rolls). While sushi is strongly associated with Japan, its origins trace back to ancient Southeast Asia, where it was used to preserve fish in fermented rice. The modern form of sushi, especially nigiri-zushi, was popularized in Japan in the 19th century.
