Daichi Kuramoto, 23, was heading out to dump the trash behind his apartment building in Hadano when he stopped cold. Lying across the pavement was a cicada—if it could still be called that. Its wings were enormous, stretching over a meter wide, with deep amber veins like stained glass. But it wasn’t the size that stunned him. It was the body. The insect’s thorax was swollen and fleshy, almost mammalian. The abdomen bulged with unnatural segments, some still twitching. Spiny legs curled inward, each joint ending in what looked like fingernails. Its head was the worst part: vaguely human, but insectoid—mandibles stretching around a skull-like face, eye sockets deep and sunken, teeth exposed as if mid-scream. It wasn’t just dead.
