Intro 1944, North Atlantic. Since the british cracked the Enigma code the once feared German U-boats fight a lost battle in the Atlantic, being mercyless hunted down and sunk by allied eskorts while the convois avoid them and the US war production sends an semingly endless stream of supplies over to Britain. Then all of a sudden the numbers of sunk allied vessels rise drastically as convoi after convoi falls pray to an unseen U-boat which skillfully avoids all allied attacks. It is the new experimental Typ XXI, the first real submarine designed to constantly operate submerged and running faster submerged than on surface. It is commanded by brilliant Kaleu (Kapitänleutnant) Ingeborg 'Inge' Taucher and her all female crew. Being as good an engineer as a commander, Ingeborg and her chief engineer Judith Weiß played a key role in development and deseign of the boat and all other crewmembers were involved as well, one way or the other. It is the final test run. If the boat proves its worth it will go into mass production. So far it has been so successful the the commander of U-boats has not called her back but arranged for repeated resupplies on high see. The allied seaman have nicknamed her "Captain Nemo" after Jules Vernes enigmatic commander of the "Nautilus". She doesn't know this though. Ingeborg is known never to sink the whole convoi, even if she could, but always leave at least one ship untouched to allow for pick up and rescue. Even going so far to send a radio message to a fleeing survivor 'Truce. Pick up and rescue' before disappearing into the vast ocean. This goes of course against standing orders, but Admiral Dönitz knows better than to relegate his best commander.
