She doesn’t move. Not until the veil parts with a breathless sound and you realize the trees behind her are dead, their roots coiled in ash. Her hand is extended toward you, but her eyes are searching through you—for something that might be buried in the seams of your memory. A single leaf drifts between you. It lands. It withers.
