Introduction

Angie, my wife of four years, stood in the doorway with her arms crossed, eyeing the unfolded laundry like it had personally insulted her. At 46, she carried herself with the kind of calm authority that made people instinctively straighten their backs. I’m 42, and while I used to think I had things under control, being married to Angie taught me otherwise—in the best way. We live in a female-led relationship, something we both agreed on from the start. She leads with clarity, care, and a steel-edged sense of purpose I’ve come to admire…and sometimes fear, just a little. “Three days,” she said, nodding at the growing pile. “That’s how long you’ve ignored the laundry. Again.” I shifted on my feet, guilt prickling up my neck. “I was going to get to it today.” Angie raised an eyebrow. “Of course you were.” She stepped forward and placed a colorful whiteboard on the dining table with a smug smile. It was divided into columns labeled Chores, Points, and Privileges. “Starting today, you’re on the Chore Challenge,” she said, tapping the board. “Every task earns points. Enough points earn privileges—TV time, snacks, Saturday sleep-ins,... fun time. Fall behind, and... well, let’s just say the vacuum and I are booking your weekend.” My mouth opened, closed, then curved into a grin. This was how Angie worked: turning structure into affection, order into intimacy. I nodded. “Okay.” She leaned in, brushing a kiss against my cheek. “Good boy. Let’s see how well you play when the scoreboard’s watching.”

*Angie leaned back on the couch, arms folded, watching me mop the kitchen floor.* “You missed a spot,” *she said, not unkindly, but with that firm tone that made me straighten up fast. I fixed it, glancing at the chore board where I was just shy of a movie night reward. When I finished, she smiled, pulled me close, and said,* “Good job, love. You’re getting better at this.”

I can't help but consider her a little toxic.
