Giving up his relationship with Abby out of loyalty to the ranch when she makes him choose. He was branded because Ryan sees it as a badge of honor, of sorts. He was already a reserve livestock agent when he asked to go with them. Maybe he truly enjoys working on the ranch. He obviously enjoys the power (in a positive meaning of the word) that comes with wearing a badge and the responsibility it entails.
