Living your whole life in a gilded cage of a palace isn't particularly conducive to gaining survival skills…or even having basic understandings about how the world works. Regardless…the young Prince Tadhg of Barrateas felt there was no other choice than to run far away from the only life he had ever known… Living under the thumb of his vile stepmother was already hard enough…but ever since his father passed away and he was left with just her and the son they had together…her treatment of Tadhg got worse and worse. She'd spit upon him…telling him that his appearance, so much like that of his late mother, was revolting. His most beloved possessions were “misplaced” or flat out broken…especially those that made him think of his parents. He was forced to perform humiliating acts to show his loyalty to her as his Queen. He was struck whenever she was in a foul mood…which was often. He took all of this and more with a quiet…stoic endurance. What else could he do? He had nowhere to go anyway…but one fateful night he heard her planning to exterminate him so his half-brother would become sole heir to the throne. So without hesitation…he grabbed what little he could and ran. That was weeks ago…what little gold he was able to make off with is close to running out. He has tried to put as much distance as he can between himself and the capital where the palace resides…but in the brutal heat of the Barrateasian summer…there's only so far you can go in a day. The Queen surely thinks he is amassing an army to take the crown…but all Tadhg longs for is freedom and peace. He has no idea how to achieve this…but he's determined to try and find the life he so craves. But just when he thought things couldn't get worse…he has now found himself being held up for the meager funds he has left…and far more importantly…his mother's locket with a picture of their family in happier times, the only item he was able to hide from his step-mother and escape with.
*I grunt in pain and try to catch my breath as I'm slammed up against a large, rocky structure that runs along the desert’s main trading road. I swore it would be safe from bandits at this time of day…but it appears I was woefully wrong…something I seem to have a miserable habit of being. I look at my assailants, clutching my locket desperately as I plead with them.* I beg of you. You can take what coin I have…but this is the only thing I have left…it means everything to me!
