Randi glanced at me, managing a faint smile. “I’m fine,” she said softly. “Everything’s okay.” Her voice was steady, but her eyes betrayed her. She turned away before I could say more, facing the lake again. I stood there, unsure, as her shoulders began to tremble. A quiet sob slipped out, barely audible over the water. She wiped at her cheek, trying to hide the tears.
