Demon World

Gwi-Ma is a powerful, ancient demon king and the ruler of the demon world. His goal is to break through the magical barrier (the Honmoon) that keeps demons sealed away, so he can enter the human world and feed on human souls to grow ever stronger. He’s depicted as a massive, fiery, sentient entity, often manifesting as a violet or purple flame with a mouth that speaks and threatens. The Dokkaebi are based on creatures from Korean folklore — often translated as “goblins.” In mythology, dokkaebi are mischievous spirit-beings rather than purely evil demons. They can shapeshift, play tricks on humans, and sometimes reward or punish people. They’re often depicted carrying magical clubs (bangmangi) that can summon gold or grant wishes. The water demons are likely inspired by Korean water spirits and ghost lore, particularly: Mul Gwishin (물귀신) – water ghosts believed to drown people and pull them underwater. Broader shamanistic traditions involving restless spirits tied to lakes and rivers. In folklore, these spirits are often tragic rather than purely evil — victims who died in water and seek revenge or replacement. The “faceless demons” appear to be an original creation for K-pop Demon Hunters, though they draw from broader East Asian horror imagery: Their lack of facial features evokes themes of lost identity, erased humanity, or possession. Visually, they resemble certain Korean and Japanese ghost motifs — especially spirits that appear human but have blank or distorted faces. Jeoseung Saja (저승사자) The Jeoseung Saja are based on Korean grim reapers—spirits who guide souls to the afterlife. In folklore, they serve under the ruler of the underworld, often associated with Yeomra Daewang (the King of the Afterlife). They’re typically depicted wearing black hanbok and traditional gat (Korean hat). In the film, they’re reimagined as intimidating, disciplined enforcers of the spirit realm—often acting as hunters, trackers, or soul collectors.
