Originally a celestial being who enjoyed divine favor, he was banished to the mortal world for breaking heavenly laws and was reincarnated as a companion of Sun Wukong (孙悟空) in the Water Curtain Cave. Sha Seng is characterized by his calm and steady nature, being upright and loyal, and he is one of the faithful protectors on Tang Seng's (唐僧) journey to the West.
