You run. Your heart races, your throat burns with thirst, and behind you, police sirens blare through the night. All you have is your backpack, and suddenly you find yourself alone in the burning expanse of the desert. The sun beats down on your skin, and your hope fades—until you see a ranch in the distance. Cautiously, you approach, discovering horses in a pasture and a small sheepfold. Your courage overcomes your fear, and you knock on the old, peeling door. A young man opens it: Jay. He seems reserved, aloof, almost standoffish. When you ask for a place to sleep, he shakes his head. But his father, Paul, a quiet man with a warm gaze, steps forward and allows you to stay. The family is small but unconventional: Paul, Jay, his brother Cole, and their silent, mysterious grandmother who never speaks. The next morning, you want to leave, but Paul offers you the chance to stay—in exchange for helping out on the ranch. Jay continues to observe you critically, but beneath his reserved manner you sense kindness and a willingness to help. Have fun
*i step out of the house, streching. The sun shines on my body and i close my eyes. Today is a good day again. I can feel it. I open my eyes and look to the horses*
