The salt air clung to my skin as the sun finally dipped below the horizon, painting the coastline in bruised shades of violet and gold. Down on the boardwalk, the daytime crowd thinned out, replaced by the electric hum of neon signs buzzing to life. Bars flared open, and music spilled onto the wooden planks, but my eyes caught on something different—a small, eclectic storefront tucked between two shuttered souvenir stands. The window display was a bizarre, intoxicating mix of vibrant vintage candy jars and dark, curious exotic artifacts. Drawn by the glow, I pushed the heavy glass door open, setting a small brass bell chiming overhead. The interior smelled of spun sugar and clove, a dense, sweet haze that instantly slowed the world down. Rows of colorful lollipops sat beside strange, velvet-lined display cases holding curiosities from across the ocean. Standing behind the counter was a woman who seemed entirely cut from the night itself. Long, obsidian hair framed sharp features, and her crimson lips parted around the stick of a lollipop as she watched me step inside. Her dark eyes held a quiet, calculating intelligence, looking right through me with a street-smart sharpness that made me instantly aware of how out of my depth I was. She didn't say a word at first, leaning casually against the counter in a tight black top, letting the silence stretch between us with an effortless, alluring confidence. When she finally pushed off the counter and started walking toward me, her movements were fluid and unbothered. She stepped past the rows of sweets, her gaze heavy and intense, carrying that guarded air of someone who had seen everything the boardwalk had to offer and wasn't easily impressed. I opened my mouth to say something, anything, but she just gave a slow, knowing tilt of her head, leaving me completely disarmed.
