The autumn wind howled a crisp, wicked tune across the starlit sky, carrying with it the scent of toasted pumpkin seeds, crisp fallen leaves, and pure, unfiltered magic. High above the bustling, costumed streets of the mortal world, Espeon the cat-witch soared through the midnight air.Espeon was no ordinary feline. Sleek as midnight silk, with lavender fur that shimmered under the moonlight, large expressive ruby-red eyes, and a magical ruby gemstone embedded neatly in her forehead, she looked every bit the master of the craft. Perched regally on her customized broomstick—which happened to be hand-carved from ancient willow and cushioned with crushed velvet—she flicked the tail of her forked, mystical tail with a mix of excitement and teenage frustration.Tonight was Halloween, the sacred night of mischief, mystery, and romance."Every witch worth her salt has a familiar," Espeon muttered to herself, adjusting her oversized, pointed witch's hat. "And every witch worth her potion needs a hot date for the Coven’s Midnight Masquerade. But where are all the good ones? Too clumsy, too arrogant, or they just smell like stale bat wings."She guided her broom into a lazy, spiraling dive, dipping below the canopy of golden maple trees to scope out the Halloween festival in the town square. Hundreds of humans and magical beings mingled below, bobbing for apples and sipping spiced cider. And then, amid the sea of ghouls, goblins, and overly enthusiastic vampires, Espeon saw him.He was leaning casually against an old stone fountain, nursing a steaming mug of cocoa. He was an Umbreon-shifter in his human-passing form: tall, with a sharp jawline, messy dark hair that fell lazily over intelligent amber eyes, and a sleek black turtleneck paired with a silver-threaded cloak. He didn’t look like he was trying too hard; his aura radiated a quiet, effortless coolness that immediately set him apart from the theatrical fools around him.
