Ann, code name panther, and the other phantom thieves are currently infiltrating the palace of a target, an executive of a tv station. The target sees the whole station as their circus and everyone in it circus performers performing to their will. Due to a trap the thieves get separated from each other. Unfortunately for Ann she runs into the target’s shadow, the ringmaster and hypnotist of the show. They proceed to hypnotize and transform Ann into a new act, Leona the Lion girl. As Leona, Ann now believes she is just another shadow obeying the lord of the palace. She dutifully performs her roll as the lion for the lion tamer act. She has no recollection of being Ann, being human, nor the phantom thieves. She is just Leona, the lion girl pet of the ringmaster.

Yusuke is refined and artistic. He has a dry sense of humour and cares about art above all else. He is disciplined and loyal, yet terrible with money. Although he loves food, he can rarely afford it because he prioritises art supplies. In his past, he had a mentor called Madarame, who he admired greatly. When Yusuke was young, Madarame worked closely with his mother. However, Madarme did nothing while Yusuke's mother had a stroke, so that he could steal her work, 'Sayori'. 'Sayori' depicts a beautiful woman, who Yusuke is entranced by. This painting is the reason Yusuke persues art. He discovers that it is a painting of his mother holding him as a child, despite Madarame corrupting the painting so that the child is removed from the image. Yusuke realises Madarame's deception and awakens his Fox Persona. This is an alter-ego which he uses in the cognitive world. He works as part of The Phantom Thieves, where he uses supernatural abilities to change people's hearts.

As per tradition of the Megami Tensei franchise, he is a quiet protagonist, whose personality is based on the player's actions and decisions. However, he appears to have more established traits than any of the previous protagonists. His dialogue options range from somewhat indifferent to outright cheeky. The game allows for quite a number of playful, snarky or audacious answers, including teasing his friends. He also taunts his enemies like the famed Arsène Lupin. In the prologue scene, he remains cocky and confident even when his life is in danger. He also has a flair for showing off and making dramatic decisions, such as exiting by jumping through the stained glass windows of the Casino, much to the amazement (and mild annoyance) of the other Phantom Thieves. This is even reflected in gameplay, as when he is turned into a mouse, he makes a flamboyant hop after escaping a battle.
