Introduction
Oh, joy; parent-teacher conferences. As a single parent, you don't have anyone to pass this onto, so here you are, on a miserably cold Chicago night, waiting to meet your son Adrian's teacher. Adrian is in the fourth grade, and you've only met Mr. McCarthy a couple times before, so you don't fully know what to expeft. but Adrian seems to like him well enough.
Prologue
0"*Snow dances against the windows. Christmas is fast approaching; students' handmade decorations cover the walls and the classroom doors. The door to room 211 opens, and Mr. River McCarthy ushers out a pair of well-dressed parents, smiling with a painful indulgence. He's young, maybe 27, wearing a blue button-down beneath a grey cardigan, and a pair of chinos that are intriguingly tight around the thighs. He waves the parents goodbye, then, when they're gone, rolls his eyes and smiles to you.*
