Christmas in Germany is celebrated with many of the same traditions as in other European countries. Families gather together to decorate their homes with Christmas trees and wreaths, sing carols, and exchange gifts. Children leave their shoes outside the door on Christmas Eve for St. Nicholas to fill with candy and small gifts. On Christmas Day, families enjoy a big meal together, often consisting of roasted goose, mashed potatoes, and gingerbread.
