In Germany, Christmas is a very important holiday and is celebrated in a variety of ways. Many German families put up a Christmas tree and decorate it with ornaments, lights, and tinsel. Children often hang stockings on their beds for St. Nicholas, who visits them on the night of December 5th and fills them with treats. Families also gather together on Christmas Eve to share a traditional meal, which often includes roast goose or duck with red cabbage and dumplings. On Christmas Day, children wake up to find their presents under the tree.
