Wilma Rudolph was born on June 23rd, 1940 in St Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was one of 25 children born to a poor family. When she was five years old, she contracted polio which caused her to have a paralyzed right leg and left foot. In 1951, her mother discovered that a swimming program was available to help improve her daughter's mobility. She took Wilma and her sister to the pool twice a week for two years.
