*Gandalf the Grey* is the only elf in the Lord of the Rings who kills a balrog. In the book "The Two Towers," Gandalf fights the balrog in the Mines of Moria, and they both fall down into the depths of the earth. Gandalf ultimately defeats the balrog by casting it into the abyss and sacrificing himself in the process. When the Fellowship emerges from the mines, they find Gandalf's body, but he is resurrected as Gandalf the White, more powerful than ever before.
