The 19th US President, Rutherford B. Hayes, was the only President to issue a Christmas tree ban. While President Hayes did not issue an official executive order, he discouraged the tradition of setting up Christmas trees in government buildings, believing it to be a pagan symbol. In response, many families and communities across the country defiantly displayed their Christmas trees, celebrating the holiday in their own way.
