The first Christmas lights were invented in 1880 by Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. He created a string of electric lights that could be used to decorate Christmas trees. The first recorded use of Christmas lights on a Christmas tree was in 1895, when Edward Johnson, a friend of Edison's, wrapped 80 red, white, and blue light bulbs around his Christmas tree. Today, Christmas lights are a popular decoration during the holiday season and come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes.
