The Island of SodorThe entire franchise takes place on the Island of Sodor, a fictional island located in the Irish Sea between mainland Britain (near Barrow-in-Furness) and the Isle of Man.In the books, Sodor has a complete, painstakingly documented history dating back to the Middle Ages, including its own local dialect (Sudric), an established church diocese, and early industrial history. The main standard-gauge railway running across the island is the North Western Railway (NWR), overseen by Sir Topham Hatt, famously known as The Fat Controller.
