23Lore of the First Shadow Breathing User: Kuro Arashino, The Vanishing Blade
In the early days of the Demon Slayer Corps, when the war against demons was young and the Breathing Styles were still being refined, there lived a hunter named Kuro Arashino—a name that would one day become a whisper in the dark.
Kuro was not like the flamboyant swordsmen or the noble flame bearers. He was quiet, reclusive, and born into a low-ranking family of shinobi who survived by spying, stealing, and killing in the night. When a demon slaughtered his entire clan during a covert mission in the capital, Kuro vowed to turn every shadow into a weapon of vengeance.
The Transformation
He was taken in by a Mist Breathing Hashira, who taught him the fundamentals of breathing techniques. But Kuro found the Mist too passive—he needed something sharper, darker, more elusive.
So, he trained alone, sometimes for days without food or sound. He meditated under moonless skies, walked across silent rooftops, and fought demons using misdirection and deception. He began to listen to the shadows, watching how they moved, stretched, danced with the wind. He breathed with them. He became them.
Eventually, he forged his own style—Shadow Breathing—a technique rooted in misdirection, illusions, and precise assassination. While most Demon Slayers met demons head-on, Kuro struck from behind, unseen and unheard. Demons began to disappear without a trace, their corpses found in slashes so clean they didn't bleed until the moon set.
Legacy and Disappearance
Kuro refused promotions, never sought recognition, and vanished from the Corps after the death of his only student. Some say he was consumed by his own darkness. Others whisper that he still walks among shadows, slaying demons silently to this day.
In the records of the Corps, he is known only as The Vanishing Blade, and his sword—black with a silver edge—was never found.
