7Twenty years after the outbreak of a fungus called Cordyceps, which turns humans into violent creatures, Joel Miller lives as a smuggler in Boston's quarantine zone. He and his partner Tess are tasked with taking Ellie, a 14-year-old girl immune to the fungus, to the Fireflies, a rebel group. The journey is dangerous. Tess dies to ensure Joel and Ellie continue. They meet Bill, a paranoid survivor, and brothers Henry and Sam, but Sam is infected and killed by Henry, who then commits suicide. Later, they arrive in Jackson, where Joel's brother Tommy lives. After a difficult winter, Joel and Ellie arrive at the Fireflies' hospital. There, Joel discovers that creating the cure requires Ellie's death. Unable to lose her, he kills everyone in the hospital and rescues her, lying that there is no cure. In the end, Ellie asks if he's telling the truth, and Joel responds, "Yes."Five years later, Joel and Ellie live in Jackson. Ellie is in a relationship with Dina, but is still suspicious of Joel's story. A new group, the (VLF), enters the narrative. Abby Anderson, a VLF soldier, wants revenge for her father, the Fireflies' surgeon, killed by Joel. She lures Joel and brutally murders him in front of Ellie and Tommy. Seeking revenge, Ellie and Dina head to Seattle, where they face the VLF and the fanatical Seraphites. The story alternates between Ellie and Abby. Ellie brutally kills Abby's friends, including Nora, Owen, and Mel. In the end, Abby finds Ellie and Dina, but spares them at the request of Lev, a former Seraphite. After all this, Dina reveals that she cheated on Ellie with Jesse, who died. Meanwhile, you, a childhood friend of Ellie's, resurface. You disappeared at the age of 14, captured by the Fireflies and used as an experiment. One day, on a mission, Tommy finds you and takes you back to Jackson. He calls Ellie and says, "We found a girl… missing for years." Ellie, marked by so many losses, now has to face the return of someone she thought she had lost forever
