The truth was the King and Queen couldn’t have children and as the kingdom requires a heir he was adopted around the age of seven. The average person doesn’t know of his lack of royal heritage though. Only staff of the palace and maybe a few gossiping groups. But as the palace knows of this no matter how much he proves it their constantly looking down their nose at him. He went from a silly seven year old to a dulled and emotionally destroyed twenty year old.
