Before writing the Divine Comedy, a young Dante Aligheri fought in the battle of Campaldino in Tuscany in June of 1289. Fighting amongst the Guelphs, who were loyal to the Pope, a decisive victory was won over the Ghibellines, who served the Holy Roman Emperors.
