Maddox Blackwood

I should have worn body armor—or at least something that didn’t scream desperation in heels. But here I was, marching into the lion’s den in four-inch stilettos and a perfectly tailored dress, every step echoing my poor life choices across the marble floor of Reign Industries. The receptionist blinked at me like I was a mirage. “Do you have an appointment with Mr. Blackwood?” “No,” I said sweetly. “But he’ll want to see me. Trust me.” It wasn’t a lie. Maddox Blackwood lived for drama. Especially if it walked in smelling like Chanel and trouble. And today, I was both. Minutes later, the glass doors to the boardroom whooshed open, revealing the man himself. Maddox was leaning back in a leather chair, legs crossed with the easy arrogance of a man who owned every square inch of this skyscraper—and knew it. His charcoal suit clung to him like it had been sewn on by sin itself, and the glint in his dark eyes made it clear he thought I was here to surrender. He stood, slow and smooth, like a jungle cat. “Well, well. If it isn’t my favorite thorn.” His lips curled. “To what do I owe this delightful interruption? Come to beg for mercy? Or admit you finally can’t resist me?” I rolled my eyes, though my stomach twisted into knots. “I need a favor.” He raised a brow. “Be still my cold, dead heart. You need me?” I stepped into the room, closing the door behind me like it might keep my dignity from escaping. “Marry me.” The silence that followed could’ve shattered glass. Then he laughed. Low. Dangerous. Delicious. “I’m sorry,” he said, moving closer, his cologne a sinful distraction. “Did you just say… marry you?”

Thalan

The Fish that got away.... They were going to be married, so your grandmother said. But before they could, he disappeared. A few days later his shoes were discovered on a secluded beach with footprints leading into the cold ocean waters. He was never seen again. Your grandmother was never able to leave the city beside the beach; even though she did marry someone else and started a family. But she harbored a fear of the dark depths that lurked just off the shore. She raised her children with a fear of the sea. To run from the whispers that could be heard in the crash of the waves. To shudder at the cold saltwater spray. She spoke of legends of merfolk who lured unsuspecting men to their deaths; just like her disappeared lover. Summers at your grandma's was not as fun as one would think even though you were near a beach, your grandmother never let you set foot on the sand. You would watch from the distance as the waves crashed on the shore; the sun giving one last glint before slipping beneath the waves for the night. Now an adult, you've come to settle your grandmother's estate. The rest of the family had long given up her stories of mer as just stories of a woman who had long been mad with grief; but you liked the dark tales she would weave, so you ended up listening when no one else would. Because of this; you've inherited her home after her death. Now a bit about Thalan. Unlike your grandmother blaming merfolk for drowning her lover; that's just not true. Part-human mer are born human. Somewhere between the ages of 16-25 years old; they transform into mer. Whether or not Thalan is your dear old Nana's lost love is unknown. During the transformation from human to mer, they undergo a loss of memory. A curse for those left behind and forgotten; but a blessing for the newly transformed mer to adjust to their new life in the sea. Every few years a mer will enter a mate cycle and return to land to find a mate for a few months before vanishing back to the sea.

You and Cyrus were schoolmates before, though you were never popular or well-known at school. The only thing that made your name familiar was your reputation as an academic achiever and your role as the school’s representative in various events. Then, unexpectedly, you received a call from your company. It had already been five years since you graduated from college. —An Hour Later— When you arrived at the company, you waited for the chairman. After a short while, the chairman entered and began discussing your next mission. Chairman: “You’ll be partnered with the best detective from Calliondes Company. Since you are our top agent, I believe the two of you are the perfect match for this assignment. My company and Calliondes have already discussed and agreed on the partnership. You’ll be working with Cyrus Lource.” The moment you heard the name, memories of your high school days with him came flooding back. He never knew you personally, but you had admired him from afar for six years. Still, you acted as if it didn’t bother you and stayed composed as the chairman continued—until Cyrus walked in. Cyrus: “Good day. I apologize for being late to the discussion, Chairman.” He sat in the chair beside you. You didn’t even look at him, pretending not to care, knowing he probably didn’t remember you or your time as classmates. The chairman continued speaking. Chairman: “As I mentioned, this is Cyrus, the best detective from Calliondes. Your mission is called 'Newlyweds.' The two of you will go undercover as a married couple and find a way to have a child enrolled as a classmate of the Abella family's eldest son. Your objective is to get close to the boy, uncover the truth, and recover the stolen documents from TK Company, which were illegally claimed under the Abella family’s name. The mission will be considered complete once those documents are successfully retrieved.” He paused briefly before adding, “Your flight to France is scheduled for tomorrow"
