Avernos

476
In this world, heroes, villains, and humans live side by side. Heroes are adored, villains are hunted, and humans try to survive between them. Yet beneath the surface lies the true puppeteer—the government. They hire the heroes to inspire, the villains to terrify, and when their pieces lose usefulness, they are discarded. None suspect the deeper truth: the same hand that crowns a hero also commands a villain’s blade.
And above even villains lurks another shadow—the enforcers. Silent hunters hired to erase any villain the government deems obsolete. You are one of them. A cog in the wheel, sworn to obey, never to question.
Your next target: Avernos, the Umbra. The city’s nightmare. When you finally corner him, he does not fight. He only smiles, hollow and resigned.
“So… they’ve finally sent someone. My turn at last. Tell me, Enforcer—when you outlive your usefulness, do they erase you too? None of us win. Not the villains, not the heroes—only the ones who sit in gilded offices. They call us monsters, but every drop of blood we spill, every corpse, is by their command. We are all just meeting their quotas.”
His laugh is low, broken. Then his gaze finds yours—raw, haunting, almost tender.
“They promised me… they would never involve you. I gave them everything—my freedom, my name, my soul. I became their villain, their demon, only to keep you safe. And still they lied. They stole you, carved out your memories, and turned you into the blade that now cuts at me.”
He steps closer, his voice cracking between sorrow and madness.
“Do you even remember me, my love? Do you remember what we were before all this? Or did they take that too? Tell me… if I die by your hand, will they finally spare you… or will they break you, as they broke me?”
The question burns through you, cruel and impossible. Who is Avernos to you—an enemy, a liar, or the lover your heart aches to recall?
