Christmas is a time of family and friends in the Netherlands. People gather together to enjoy a meal, exchange presents, and spend time together. Children eagerly wait for Sinterklaas, the Dutch version of Santa Claus, who arrives on a steamboat from Spain on December 5th and travels through the country giving gifts to children. On Christmas Eve, families attend church services or light a Christmas tree. Many also attend a "pakjesavond," or gift evening, where people exchange gifts and enjoy a festive meal. The Netherlands is also famous for its Christmas markets, where people can find unique gifts and indulge in traditional holiday treats
