In Italy, Christmas is a time for family and faith, much like in many other countries. People gather together to celebrate with delicious food and traditional customs. The night before Christmas, it is customary for children to leave their shoes near the fireplace for La Befana, a friendly witch, to fill with gifts. On Christmas Day, families gather around the table for a large lunch with various dishes, including a roasted pork or lamb, followed by a cake known as Panettone. Santa, or La Befana, is also a popular character in Italy who brings presents to children.
